Director of Interconnection

Our client, a leading innovator in energy storage and distributed generation is seeking a highly skilled Director of Interconnection to spearhead interconnection activities across multiple markets. This pivotal role will focus on optimizing transmission and distribution processes to support the company's mission of transforming the electrical grid into a cleaner, more reliable, and cost-effective system. The Director of Interconnection will play a key role in strategic planning, resource management, and market engagement, ensuring project milestones are met with precision and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interconnection Strategy: Lead the evaluation of transmission and distribution tariffs, timelines, and costs across multiple regional markets to identify optimal interconnection strategies.

  • Portfolio Management: Oversee and track the portfolio of interconnection-related studies, schedules, and tasks to ensure alignment with project milestones and compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of 4-8 Interconnection Engineers, setting KPIs and growth plans to drive continuous improvement in processes and standards.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary contact for Independent System Operators (ISOs), Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), transmission service providers, and utilities on interconnection activities.

  • Cross-functional Coordination: Facilitate information exchange between the pre-construction, engineering, and development teams to maintain clear, timely communication and efficient workflow.

  • Application Process Oversight: Lead the completion and submission of interconnection applications, collaborating closely with internal teams and external consultants to ensure accuracy and adherence to deadlines.

  • Consultant Management: Identify, contract, and manage external consultants to support various interconnection tasks, including application deliverables, studies, and engineering reviews.

  • System Cost Analysis: Evaluate system upgrade costs, advising stakeholders on necessary changes to the project development schedule to optimize budget and resources.

  • Power Flow Simulations: Conduct or coordinate power flow simulations to anticipate future system conditions, supporting site selection, interconnection agreements, power purchase agreements, and financing processes.

  • Risk Assessment: Collaborate with the Development team to assess and mitigate potential site selection issues, providing insights from interconnection queues within utility and ISO regions.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required.

  • Experience: 8+ years in generation interconnection and transmission planning, ideally with experience at a large infrastructure developer, utility, transmission provider, or energy consultancy.

  • Market Knowledge: Familiarity with major energy markets such as CAISO, PJM, SPP, ISO-NE, and other RTOs; solid understanding of AC/DC fundamentals and three-phase power systems.

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in power system software (e.g., PSS/e, TARA, Aspen One-Liner) with strong skills in power flow modeling and analysis.

  • Regulatory Expertise: Thorough knowledge of RTO and utility tariffs, business practices, and protocols, with a keen understanding of U.S. power markets and renewable project development, especially in solar and battery storage.

  • Analytical Abilities: Exceptional research and analytical skills, with a talent for synthesizing complex data and delivering clear, actionable recommendations.

  • Organizational Skills: Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
