Market Signal: storage doubles by 2028 and 2027 is staffed now

US utility-scale battery storage sits near 52GW and operators plan another 54GW by the end of 2028.

The EIA puts installed US utility-scale battery capacity at nearly 52GW as of mid-2026, after three years of 70% average annual growth. Operators added 8.3GW in the first half of this year and have reported plans for another 54GW by the end of 2028.

The signal The additions are not spread evenly: 14GW is scheduled for the rest of 2026, 26GW for 2027, and 14GW for 2028. Everything that energizes in 2027 is being permitted, financed, and staffed right now.
