Market Signal: two states bought storage PJM could not supply

Illinois and Maryland sought 1,388MW of PJM storage and contracted 520MW, short of target for want of bid-ready projects.

PJM Interconnection carries 60GW of battery storage in its queue against 596MW operating. Illinois set a 588MW PJM storage target and contracted 80MW. Maryland awarded 440MW against an 800MW target. Together the two states sought 1,388MW and contracted 520MW.

The signal Both states had buyers and contracts in place and too few PJM projects ready to bid. Illinois is asking developers for feedback before 2027, and Maryland's Round 2 opens by January 1, 2027.

Hiring Developers holding PJM queue positions need Development Managers who can take sites from queue to bid, and Interconnection Engineers who can carry projects through Cycle 1 studies before Maryland's Round 2 and the next Illinois procurement close.
